Interview with Richter Fine Art

I hope everyone had a great holiday (and didn't mind the impromptu vacation I took from posting). Lets start this Monday off with a bang... and an interview! Stumbling around Etsy a little while ago, I found this great artist by accident. Luckily, when I asked if they would like to be interviewed, they said yes.

Bio:

I grew up in the country in mid Missouri spending most of my time making things rather than hanging out with friends or going out on dates. Creating has been like an incurable virus for me. I there is no cure to make it stop so I just have to keep creating and creating constantly. I feel as though my time is being wasted if it is not spent making something. When my wife and daughter fall asleep I am up til 1:30 or so drawing/painting and then get up at 6:00 the next morning. I went to college for 2.5 years and then stopped going because I didn't care about assignments. I only cared about making the things that needed to get out of me and felt I needed to experiment at my own pace to figure out the best way to channel my creativity. My wife and daughter somehow found a way to squeeze in at the top of my life above the need for creation. HAHAHA
I live by this, If you are not using your brain and trying to out-do yourself from yesterday then you are failing.

How did you find Etsy? How long have you been selling on Etsy?
My wife made crafts and stayed home with my daughter and saw Etsy as a way to make an income and watch our daughter. My wife's shop is shanelilyrain.etsy.com

How would you describe your style? Has any other artists etc influenced your style?
My style is based on emotion and the beauty of the human form. The way the old sculpture masters achieved the beautiful emotion and dead-on human structure in such a gorgeous way is always in the back of my mind.

How long have you been creating?
I have been creating since I was a child, drawing with a pen on printer paper.

Have you had any mentors, or are you self taught?

I am mainly self taught.

Do you sell more at one time of year than others?
I haven't seen a pattern in my sales selling more at one time than the other.

What is one thing about your creative process that you think most people don’t know?
I am always thinking. It doesn't matter if I am hanging out with my family, at the store, at a funeral...it's always on my mind. I also make everything sitting on the floor in a tiny space.

What kind of custom work do you do most often? What has been your favorite custom order?
I hate doing custom orders because it is not straight from the thought process of my brain and when someone else gives me an order I get crabby. I am a spoiled brat about my drawing/creation time. Usually I do custom portraits for people.

Do you have a favorite item you have made?
I don't really have a favorite item I have made, They all work together and are all part of what I feel and experience so it would be hard to narrow down what would be a favorite.

What is the best reaction you have gotten from one of your pieces?
I did a drawing including someone before and they liked it so much that they cried out of joy. I love influencing people with my art and giving them a chance to experience what I have within myself.

I have so much to share. My vision inside only grows. I could live 200 years and not have it all out.
